How to Convert iPhone Voice Memos (M4A) to MP3 or WAV
Get a recording out of the iPhone Voice Memos app and turn the .m4a into an MP3 for sharing or a WAV for transcription and editing, without uploading it.
Step 1: Get the memo off your iPhone
In the Voice Memos app, tap the recording, tap the three-dot button, then Share. From there you can Save to Files, AirDrop it to a Mac, or send it to yourself by email. The file arrives as .m4a.
Step 2: Choose MP3 or WAV
| MP3 | WAV | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Small | Large — about 10 MB a minute for CD-quality stereo |
| Plays on | Everything | Everything |
| Best for | Sharing, email, listening, car stereos | Transcription services, audio editors, noise reduction |
| Quality | A second, very light compression | No further loss |
| Convert with | M4A to MP3 | M4A to WAV |
If the recording is going into software that will process it, choose WAV: starting from uncompressed audio means the only compression is the one at the end. For everything else, MP3 is smaller and plays anywhere.
Step 3: Convert
- Open M4A to MP3 or M4A to WAV
- Drop the memo in — or up to 20 at once
- For MP3, choose 96 or 128 kbps: speech needs far less than music, and the file comes out half the size of the default with no audible difference
- Download the result
A memo converts in a few seconds. The recording is processed in your browser tab and is never sent to a server — which matters for a recording that is someone's voice, often saying something private.
Why not just rename the file to .mp3?
Because the extension is only a label. The audio inside an .m4a is AAC, and a player that expects MP3 data will not find any. Some forgiving players look inside and play it anyway, but the devices that most need an MP3 — car stereos, older players — are exactly the ones that will not.
What converting will not do
- It will not make the recording clearer. Background noise and a distant microphone stay as they were; converting changes the format, not the sound
- It will not unlock protected audiobooks. An .m4b bought from a store is usually copy-protected and cannot be converted. Your own memos and unprotected files convert normally
- Cover art may not survive in an MP3. Title and other tags are carried across unless you switch on "Remove metadata"

Frequently asked questions
What format are iPhone voice memos?
M4A — AAC audio in an MP4 container. Share a memo from the Voice Memos app and it arrives as an .m4a file.
How do I convert an iPhone voice memo to MP3?
Share the memo from the Voice Memos app to Files or email, then open an M4A to MP3 converter and drop the file in. Convertube converts it in your browser without uploading it.
Should I convert to MP3 or WAV for transcription?
WAV, if the transcription tool accepts it — it avoids a second compression. Many services also accept MP3, which is smaller to send.
What bitrate should I use for a voice recording?
96 or 128 kbps. Speech uses far less of the range than music, so a higher bitrate only makes the file bigger.
Why is the WAV so much bigger than the M4A?
WAV stores the audio without compression — about 10 MB per minute of CD-quality stereo — while M4A is compressed.
