HEIC to JPG FAQ
Why will my HEIC photo not open?
Because HEIC is what iPhones have saved by default since iOS 11 in 2017, and much else never caught up. Windows needs extra codecs from the Microsoft Store to show one, and many upload forms, older Android phones and desktop programs refuse it outright. JPG opens everywhere.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The decoder is libheif, compiled to WebAssembly and running in your browser; it is downloaded once, about 1.4 MB, on your first conversion. To check, convert one photo, switch off your network, and convert another.
Will the JPG be bigger, and is quality lost?
Bigger, usually around twice the size: HEIC stores a photo in roughly half the space JPG needs at similar quality. Both are lossy, so converting is a second pass; at the default setting the difference is hard to see, and you can raise the quality for more headroom.
What happens to the date, location and camera details?
They are dropped. The conversion goes through the browser's canvas, which carries no metadata across, so GPS coordinates and camera details are stripped along with the capture date. Rotation is applied to the pixels, so portrait shots stay upright.
Can I convert many photos at once, and what about Live Photos?
Up to 20 at a time — select or drop them together. A Live Photo is a HEIC still plus a separate short video; the still is what converts. When a file holds several images, such as a burst, you get the primary one, the image your phone shows.
How do I stop my iPhone taking HEIC photos?
Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible makes the camera save JPG from then on, at the cost of larger files. Photos already taken stay HEIC, which is what this converter is for.
Does it accept .heif files?
Yes. Files ending in .heif are accepted and converted the same way as .heic files.
Is the result a JPEG file?
Yes. It is saved as .jpg, which opens in any program that opens JPEG files.
Is it really free?
Yes — every conversion on this site, with no account, no watermark and no daily cap. The work happens on your own device, so there is no server bill for us to pass on to you.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs in any modern browser, on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. There is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for, and once you have converted a file on the page it keeps working with the network switched off.
