Turn an animated GIF into an MP4 video in your browser, no upload. A 41 MB GIF became a 1.9 MB MP4 in 18 seconds, every frame kept at its original timing.

What happens to the GIF
Each frame of the GIF is encoded as H.264 video in an MP4 — the format phones, upload forms and social sites take where a GIF is refused or shrunk. A GIF stores every frame as a full picture with at most 256 colours; H.264 stores what changes, so the MP4 is usually a small fraction of the size.
- Timing kept: each frame lasts as long as it did in the GIF, including a pause on the last frame. The video runs at a constant 30 frames a second, which a tenth-of-a-second GIF delay — the commonest — fits exactly, and which is inside the 23–60 fps Meta asks for on Reels.
- Even size: H.264 needs an even width and height, so an odd one is trimmed by a pixel — 301 × 201 becomes 300 × 200.
- No sound track: a GIF has none, so the MP4 has none either.
- Quality: "Video quality" under "Show advanced options" trades size against detail; the measurements below use the default.

Every MP4 was as long as its GIF to within 0.01 seconds, decoded without errors and had its index at the start of the file. Compared with the GIF frame by frame, the first two scored a VMAF of 86 on average, on a scale where the GIF itself would be 100; part of the difference is the GIF's own dithering noise, which the video smooths out. The GIFs were made with FFmpeg from the open-source film Big Buck Bunny, the held-frame one with Pillow. Measured on 29 October 2026 on this page in Chrome, on a laptop with an Intel Core i7-1165G7 and 16 GB of memory, from choosing the file to the download being ready.
Transparent GIFs
A video has no transparency. Transparent parts of the GIF come out white in the MP4 — that is what our test file did — so a sticker or logo with a see-through background gains a white box around it.
Looping
A GIF repeats by itself; an MP4 has no such setting and plays once, unless the site or player showing it loops it. A 2-second GIF makes a 2-second video — shorter than the 3 seconds Meta lists as the minimum for a Reel.
What it does not do
- No transparency, as above.
- No sound, no repeat count and no trimming: the MP4 is the GIF, once through.
- No GIF over 80 MB, because a GIF is checked against the image limit; the upload box states it.
GIF to MP4 FAQ
How do I turn a GIF into a video?
Open this page, add the GIF and download the MP4 when the row says Done. Nothing is installed and the GIF is not uploaded; a 5-second GIF took about 6 seconds in our tests, a 41 MB one 18.
Why is the MP4 so much smaller than the GIF?
A GIF stores every frame as a complete picture; H.264 video stores mostly what changes from one frame to the next. Our 41 MB GIF became a 1.9 MB MP4, and a 3.4 MB one 190 KB.
Will the MP4 loop like the GIF?
Not by itself. An MP4 plays once; whether it repeats is up to the player or the site showing it.
What happens to a transparent background?
It turns white, because video has no transparency. In our test the see-through parts of the GIF came out white in the MP4.
Does it keep the GIF's speed?
Yes. Each frame keeps its own duration, including a long pause on the last frame: a GIF of 3.2 seconds gave an MP4 of 3.2 seconds. The video is 30 frames a second, so very short GIF delays are rounded to the nearest 1/30 s.
Is the GIF uploaded?
No. The conversion runs inside this page with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg; open your browser's network panel while it runs and no request carries the file.
