M4A to WAV FAQ
Does this restore the original quality?
No. The AAC inside the M4A is lossy and what it discarded is gone. WAV simply prevents any further loss from being added.
Why convert to WAV rather than MP3?
Because MP3 would add a second lossy pass. If the audio is going into an editor, start uncompressed and encode once at the end.
Why is the file so much bigger?
Because WAV stores every sample uncompressed — about 10 MB per minute in CD-quality stereo, regardless of how the audio sounds.
Is FLAC a better choice?
Usually. FLAC holds identical samples at roughly half the size and most editors read it. Choose WAV when a tool specifically demands uncompressed PCM.
Does it work on iPhone voice memos?
Yes, that is the typical input. Apple devices record memos as M4A, and transcription and noise-reduction tools generally want WAV.
Is it really free?
Yes — every conversion on this site, with no account, no watermark and no daily cap. The work happens on your own device, so there is no server bill for us to pass on to you.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs in any modern browser, on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. There is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for, and once you have converted a file on the page it keeps working with the network switched off.
