WMV to MP3 FAQ
Why will nothing play my WMV?
Because Windows Media codecs were never adopted outside Microsoft's ecosystem, and support has been removed from most modern software. The file is not broken; the world moved on.
My conversion failed — why?
The most likely reason is DRM. Files bought from old Windows Media stores are encrypted, and nothing that respects that encryption can decode them. Recordings you made yourself convert normally.
Will the audio quality drop?
Slightly. WMA is lossy, so re-encoding to MP3 is a second pass. For the speech and training material most WMV archives hold, it is not noticeable at the default bitrate.
What bitrate should I use?
128 kbps for speech, which most WMV content is. Go higher only if the source was genuinely high-quality music, which for this format is uncommon.
Is this faster than converting the video?
