MPEG to MP3 converter

Convert MPG or MPEG to MP3 in your browser, no upload. A 10-minute 300 MB TV recording gave a 14 MB MP3 in 32 seconds; VCD and DVD files work too.

What happens to the MPG

An .mpg or .mpeg file holds MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video interleaved with a soundtrack: MP2 on Video CDs, camcorders and TV recorders, AC-3 (Dolby Digital) on DVDs. This page reads only the soundtrack and encodes it as MP3 — 192 kbps unless you choose otherwise. The video is skipped, not converted, which is why it takes seconds.

  • Kept: the full length, and the source's sample rate — 44.1 kHz from a Video CD, 48 kHz from a DVD or TV recording.
  • Mixed down: 5.1 surround becomes stereo, because an MP3 holds at most two channels.
  • Your choice: bitrate, sample rate and mono are under "Show advanced options".

Every MP3 was as long as its MPG to within 0.05 seconds and decoded without errors. The test files were made from the open-source film Big Buck Bunny with FFmpeg's Video CD and DVD presets. Measured on 29 October 2026 on this page in Chrome, on a laptop with an Intel Core i7-1165G7 and 16 GB of memory, from choosing the file to the download being ready.

DVD files with LPCM audio

Some DVDs, and .mpg files copied from them, carry uncompressed LPCM sound instead of AC-3. This converter cannot decode it: the job stops with "The converter could not finish this file". The desktop FFmpeg did convert the same test file with ffmpeg -i input.mpg -vn -b:a 192k output.mp3.

How large an MPG fits

The upload box takes files up to 2.0 GB on this page: the video is never decoded and the MP3 is small, so the ceiling is higher than for converting the video itself. The largest file we tested was the 300 MB recording above.

What it does not do

  • No LPCM DVD audio, as above.
  • No .vob files: the page accepts .mpg and .mpeg.
  • No video: for an MP4 with the picture, use MPEG to MP4.

MPEG to MP3 FAQ

How do I convert MPG to MP3?

Open this page, add the .mpg or .mpeg file and download the MP3 when the row says Done. Nothing is installed and the file is not uploaded; a 3-minute file took 6 to 11 seconds in our tests.

Is the video converted as well?

No. Only the soundtrack is decoded and encoded; the video is skipped. That is why a 300 MB, 10-minute recording finished in 32 seconds.

What bitrate should I choose?

192 kbps, the default, suits most recordings. The sound in an MPG is already compressed — MP2 at 224 kbps on a Video CD, AC-3 on a DVD — so choosing a higher MP3 bitrate than the source had adds size, not quality.

What happens to 5.1 surround sound?

It is mixed down to stereo, because an MP3 holds at most two channels. In our test a 5.1 AC-3 track came out as a stereo MP3 of the same length.

Why did my DVD MPG fail?

Most likely its sound is LPCM, the uncompressed audio some DVDs use, which this converter cannot decode. The desktop FFmpeg converts it: ffmpeg -i input.mpg -vn -b:a 192k output.mp3.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The conversion runs inside this page with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg; open your browser's network panel while it runs and no request carries the file.
