HEIC to PNG FAQ

Should I choose PNG or JPG for a HEIC photo?

JPG to share or upload a photo: it opens everywhere and stays a reasonable size. PNG when you are about to edit it, or need a copy that will not lose more quality each time it is saved — but expect a PNG several times larger than the HEIC.

Is the conversion lossless?

The PNG stores the decoded pixels exactly, so nothing further is lost. It cannot restore what HEIC discarded when the photo was taken, since HEIC itself is lossy; PNG stops the loss rather than undoing it.

Is transparency kept?

Yes. Camera photos have none, but a HEIC exported from an editing app or a sticker can carry an alpha channel, and PNG keeps it — which JPG cannot.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. libheif, the reference HEIC decoder, runs in your browser as WebAssembly. It is fetched once, about 1.4 MB, the first time you convert, and the photos never leave your device.

Does the PNG keep HDR and full colour depth?

No. iPhones can store 10-bit colour and an HDR layer; the PNG is a standard 8-bit image of the photo as it normally displays. For almost every use that is what you want, and it is what every program can open.

Does it accept .heif files?

Yes. Files ending in .heif are accepted and converted the same way as .heic files.

Is it really free?

Yes — every conversion on this site, with no account, no watermark and no daily cap. The work happens on your own device, so there is no server bill for us to pass on to you.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in any modern browser, on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. There is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for, and once you have converted a file on the page it keeps working with the network switched off.
