Why most online converters ask you to upload
A conventional online converter works like this: you upload → their server converts → you download. That one design choice — converting on a server — explains nearly every limit you meet on these sites:
- A copy of your file exists elsewhere: the server cannot convert what it does not have, so your file sits on someone else's machine for a while
- Paid plans and daily caps: every conversion costs them server time, and video is expensive, so free plans limit size and count and the useful features cost money
- Queues: everyone's jobs share the servers, so busy hours are slow
- Large files are hard: slow for you to upload, expensive for them to store
How conversion works without uploading
Modern browsers are powerful enough to run a complete video engine, a PDF parser and a text recognition model. Convertube puts those tools in the web page and runs them on your computer. Here is what happens to one file:
- You choose a file: it is read into the memory of the open tab — the same as a web page showing an image. Nothing is uploaded
- The right engine is chosen: images use the browser's built-in image handling; video and audio use a video engine that runs in the browser; PDFs use a dedicated layout reader and document writer; scans add on-device text recognition
- The engine loads, once: the first conversion of a type downloads its engine, which is then cached for next time
- Conversion runs on your machine: all computation happens on your computer, so the speed is your computer's
- You download the result: it is built in the browser and saved straight to your downloads; close the tab and the copy in memory is gone
Throughout, your file exists in exactly two places: your own folder and your browser's memory.
Local vs cloud conversion
| Cloud converter | Convertube | |
|---|---|---|
| File uploaded | Yes | No |
| Leak risk | Depends on their storage and retention | File never leaves your computer |
| Price | Limited free plan, paid features | Free |
| File size | Usually capped | Only your device's memory |
| Daily limit | Usually | None |
| Sign-up | Often required | Never |
| Works offline | No | Yes, once the converter has loaded |
Check it yourself in ten seconds
"We don't upload" is an easy thing to claim, so check it:
- Open any Convertube conversion page and convert one file normally (so the converter is downloaded)
- Disconnect from the network (turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the cable) — do not reload the page
- Convert another file — it still completes, because conversion never needs a server
For more detail, press F12 to open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network panel and convert again. You will see the page's own files and, the first time, the engine being downloaded — but no request carrying your file.
What it costs
- The first conversion waits a moment: the engines total about 80 MB, are downloaded only when needed, and are cached for a year
- Safari is slower: Safari lacks one browser feature needed for multi-core processing, so video conversion runs on one core — it works, it just takes longer. Chrome, Edge and Firefox are not affected
- Speed depends on your device: a fast laptop is quick; an old phone is slow
- Very large files are limited by memory: a very long video can fail on a low-memory device; converting in parts helps

Frequently asked questions
How can a file be converted online without uploading it?
The conversion software is downloaded into your browser with the page and runs on your computer. Your file is processed in the browser's memory and never sent to a server.
Is Convertube free?
Yes. Because conversion runs on your computer we have no per-conversion server cost, so there is no charge and no daily limit.
Does it work offline?
Yes — once you have converted a file in the page and the converter has downloaded, you can disconnect and keep converting.
Is there a file size limit?
No artificial limit. The practical ceiling is your device's available memory.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in a mobile browser, though speed depends on the phone and large videos will be slow.
