How to Convert MP3 to MP4: Turn Audio Into a Video File

Why sites like YouTube want a video when all you have is audio, how to turn an MP3 into an MP4 in your browser, and when a plain picture is not enough.

·

Quick answer: Open MP3 to MP4, drop in your audio and download the result: a standard MP4 with your sound over a still black picture. It converts in your browser without uploading. If you need artwork or moving images instead of black, that takes a video editor — the end of this guide covers the free ones.

Why you would need an MP4 at all

An MP3 is sound only. Plenty of places only take video:

  • YouTube accepts video files, not audio files, so a podcast episode, a song or a recorded talk has to become a video first
  • Social apps that are built around video — Instagram, TikTok and the like — will not post a bare audio file
  • Course platforms, contest entries and upload forms that list "MP4" as the only accepted type
  • Some players and TVs that browse video folders but ignore audio files

In each case the content is the audio; the video track only exists to get the file accepted. That is what this conversion makes.

How to convert MP3 to MP4

  1. Open MP3 to MP4 — or WAV to MP4 if your audio is a WAV
  2. Drop the file in, or click to choose it. You can add up to 20 at once
  3. Leave the audio quality at the default 192 kbps, or raise it for music
  4. Download the MP4

The first audio or video conversion downloads the conversion engine into your browser, once; after that it is cached and starts straight away.

What you get

Your MP4
PictureA still black frame, 640×360
Frame rate10 frames per second — nothing moves, so more would only add size
Video formatH.264, the one every player and site accepts
AudioYour sound, re-encoded to AAC at the quality you chose
LengthExactly the length of the audio
File sizeBarely larger than the MP3 — a black frame compresses to almost nothing

One thing changes on the way: MP4 files normally carry AAC audio rather than MP3, so the sound is encoded once more. At 192 kbps or above that is not something you will hear.

Your file stays on your device

The conversion runs inside the browser tab, on your own computer or phone — the audio is not uploaded to a server. That matters for unreleased music, recorded interviews and anything else you would rather not hand to a website just to change its format. To check, convert one file, switch off your Wi-Fi without reloading the page, and convert another: it still works.

When a black picture is not enough

A black frame is right when the file is only passing through — a form that demands video, a platform where the sound is the point. For a song or podcast people will actually watch on YouTube, most uploaders show cover art or a title card instead, and that is a different job: combining an image with the audio is video editing, not format conversion.

Free tools that do it:

  • Windows: Clipchamp, which comes with Windows 11 — add the image, add the audio, stretch the image to the length of the audio and export
  • Mac and iPhone: iMovie, the same way
  • Phones: most free video editors have an "image plus music" template

If you already have a video and want the opposite — the sound without the picture — use MP4 to MP3.

What this will not do

  • It will not add artwork, a waveform or lyrics. The picture is plain black, every time
  • It will not improve the sound. The audio is carried over, not cleaned up
  • It will not make a song "safe" to upload. Converting a file changes nothing about who owns the music in it

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MP3 to MP4 for free?

Open an MP3 to MP4 converter, drop the file in and download the MP4. Convertube does it in your browser, free, without uploading the audio.

Can I upload an MP3 to YouTube?

Not directly — YouTube takes video files. Convert the MP3 to MP4 first; the result is a video with your audio over a still picture.

Can I add a picture to my MP3 when converting?

Not in this converter; the picture is black. To show artwork, put the image and the audio together in a video editor such as Clipchamp or iMovie.

Does converting MP3 to MP4 lose quality?

Very slightly, because the audio is re-encoded to AAC. At 192 kbps or above the difference is not audible.

Why is the MP4 almost the same size as the MP3?

Because a still black picture compresses to almost nothing. Nearly all of the file is the audio.
