QIF files do not say which order they use. One date after the 12th settles it; a file with none is read month first, the way Quicken writes it.
Tested against an open-source reader
| What was checked | Result |
|---|---|
| QIF files with transactions | 21 files, 87 transactions: 431 of 435 fields identical (date, amount, payee, memo, number) |
Day-first files (23/10/2013) | read day-first without being told, every date correct |
European amounts (-1.234,56) | read as −1234.56 |
| Synthetic file with a known answer | 10,000 transactions, every field exact |
The four differing fields are the amount and payee of two investment records, which quiffen leaves empty and this page reads from the record’s $ and P lines. For the day-first files, quiffen had to be told the order; this page found it from the first date past the 12th.
QIF to Excel FAQ
What is a QIF file?
Quicken Interchange Format, the plain-text format Quicken used to move data in and out long before OFX. Each transaction is a run of lines, each starting with a letter that says what it holds — D for the date, T for the amount, P for the payee, L for the category — and a line holding ^ ends it. Quicken and Microsoft Money used it, and many banks and finance programs still offer it as an export.
How does it know whether 03/04 is March or April?
QIF never says, so the whole file is scanned first. One date with a first number above 12 — 23/10/2013 — proves the file is day-first; one with the second number above 12 proves it month-first. A file with neither is read month-first, the way Quicken writes. If that is wrong for your file, set “Dates in the file” before converting.
What happens to split transactions?
The transaction stays one row with its full amount, and its parts go into a Splits column as “category: amount”, separated by semicolons — for example “Groceries: -45.00; Household: -12.50”. Keeping them in one cell means the Amount column still adds up to the account’s movement, which separate split rows would count twice.
Does it handle Quicken investment accounts?
Yes. Records from an investment account get Action (Buy, Sell, Div, ReinvDiv and the rest), Security, Quantity, Price, Commission and Amount columns, taken from the record’s N, Y, Q, I, O and T lines. Cash and bank records in the same file keep their own columns.
What do the Category and Cleared columns hold?
Exactly what the file says. Category is the L line — a category such as Bills:Electric, or an account name in square brackets for a transfer. Cleared is the C line: an asterisk or c for cleared, X or R for reconciled. Neither is reinterpreted.
What if the QIF holds several accounts?
A full Quicken export lists its accounts with !Account blocks, and each transaction belongs to the last one named. Each account becomes its own sheet, named as in the file. A QIF of a single account’s transactions gives one sheet called Transactions.
Is the result a XLSX file?
Yes. It is saved as .xlsx, which opens in any program that opens XLSX files.
Is it really free?
Yes — every conversion on this site, with no account, no watermark and no daily cap. The work happens on your own device, so there is no server bill for us to pass on to you.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs in any modern browser, on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. There is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for, and once you have converted a file on the page it keeps working with the network switched off.
