Excel in Germany, France and much of Europe expects semicolons between cells and a comma in numbers. Anywhere else, keep the default.

Tested against two open-source readers

Short answer: The CSV opens in Excel with accented payees intact and amounts as numbers, in the standard form CSV importers expect. 85 OFX files from the test suites of six open-source projects — checking, credit-card and brokerage statements, which the projects label as coming from Fidelity, Vanguard, American Express, Nubank and others — were read here and by the Python libraries ofxparse and ofxtools. Where those libraries could read a file, 1,209 of 1,212 fields across 202 transactions came out identical.
What was checkedResult
Files both reference libraries read44 files, 202 transactions: 1,209 of 1,212 fields identical (date, amount, payee, memo, transaction ID, quantity, price)
Files both libraries refused22 files — a missing header, an empty balance, a date or amount they could not parse — all read here, 75 of 76 transactions identical to a plain text search of the file
Synthetic statement with a known answer10,000 transactions, every field exact

The three differing fields are one brokerage file whose trades are stamped 20:20 Eastern time: ofxparse converts that to UTC and moves each trade to the next day, while this page keeps the date the bank wrote. The one difference in the refused files is an amount written $120, read here as 120.00 where the text search keeps the dollar sign. The other 19 of the 85 files hold no transactions at all — balance-only downloads, sign-on replies, and the damaged files libofx keeps to test for crashes — and are reported as such rather than turned into an empty table.

QBO to CSV FAQ

Do the QuickBooks-specific parts come across?

The parts that describe transactions do; the parts that describe the connection do not. A QBO’s Intuit fields — the bank identifier, the user ID — exist so QuickBooks can match the file to a bank feed. They say nothing about any transaction, so the CSV carries the date, payee, memo, amount, type, cheque number, reference and transaction ID instead.

Why does the date column show ##### when I open the CSV in Excel?

Excel recognised the dates and is showing them in its own date format, in a column too narrow to fit. Widen the column and they appear. The values are dates either way. The Excel version of this page sizes its columns for you and shows dates as 2024-01-31.

Which CSV layout should I pick?

Keep the default — comma-separated, with a full stop in numbers — unless you will open the file in Excel configured for most of continental Europe. There the comma is the decimal mark; the semicolon layout writes semicolons between cells and commas in numbers, which is what that Excel expects.

Why do some rows have a reference or a number and others not?

Because the bank filled those fields only for some transactions. Cheques carry a cheque number; transfers and card payments often carry a reference; a direct debit may have neither. Empty means the file had nothing there — nothing is invented to fill the gap.

What if the QBO holds more than one account?

Every account’s transactions go into the one CSV with an Account column first, holding the account type and number from the file, so they can be filtered apart. If you would rather have them separated, the Excel version gives each account its own sheet.

Is the file uploaded?

No. Reading the QBO and writing the CSV both happen inside this page, so a client’s transactions never reach a server. That is checkable in your browser’s network panel: converting sends nothing that carries the file.

Is it really free?

Yes — every conversion on this site, with no account, no watermark and no daily cap. The work happens on your own device, so there is no server bill for us to pass on to you.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in any modern browser, on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. There is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for, and once you have converted a file on the page it keeps working with the network switched off.
